How "Between The Rocks"oil on panel painting was created.
Step by step pictures showing the creative process.
Here the basic composition is laid out in pencil on the gesso.
This painting is inspired by nature and sketched loosely from life, using the memories from years of observation, as most of my paintings are.
Since I alter it to suit my vision, this place could never be found
in real life.

Some of the underpainting has been applied, with the white
gesso still showing in some areas.

Everything but the green leaves have been laid in, still in the process
of underpainting.

Almost all the underpainting is done, except for a small area of the underlying gesso that is still exposed (white area).
The painting still has a fairly flat look to it.

Here is the almost finished painting after some of the glazes have been added over the underpainting.
The glazes can take as long as the underpainting to apply.
Glazes generally add the shadows, see through imagery and 3D depth
through the refraction of light, although some of the shadows
and depth can be added during the underpainting.

Here is the finished painting after more glazes and detail have been added and it is varnished and dried.
You can see how the color is richer and there is more depth.
